Building Positive relationships: A Soft Skill Work Shop for Police

         A soft skill workshop for Police Officers was organised on 17/06/2014 from 09.30 AM to 11.30 AM at Government Higher Primary School, Mannagudda, Mangalore. A Soft skill session on   " Building Positive relationships" was taken up by Mr.  Shrikanth Shenoy, a competent trainer who is working for a large software MNC at Mangalore.

        The event was organized by Sri. R. Hithendra, I.P.S., Commissioner of Police, Mangalore City and sponsored by Mangalore Coastal Round Table 190. 45 Police officers including women police officers were participated in this workshop.

        The training mainly comprises understanding work pattern, strengthening relations between them, importance of work planning, maximum use of available resources and team work for better public service. The seminar was also focused on identifying strength, opportunities and threats to Mangalore City Police.

Round Table Mangalore is proud to have been given this opportunity by Police Commissioner R Hitendra to serve the Mangalore Police force. A soft skill session 'Building Positive Relationships' was taken by Mr. Shreekanth Shenoy a competent trainer working for a large software MNC in Mangalore. The event was well coordinated by Assistant Commissioner of Police Mr. Subramanyam who made sure that time and efficiency was maintained. The event was completely sponsored by Mangalore Coastal Round Table 190.

 

 

The group of total strength 45 comprised of the following

·         4 Assistant Commissioners of Police

·         9 Police Inspectors (including 1 woman Police Inspector)

·         11 Police Sub-inspectors (including 1 woman Police Sub-inspector)

·         21 Assistant Sub-inspectors (including 4 woman Assistant Sun-inspectors)


 

The day began with breakfast and a quick view of the renovated sections of the school undertaken by Round Table Mangalore. The group was then welcomed by chairman Neil Rodrigues and vice-chairman Sunil Talithaya along with project coordinator Sudeesh Karunakaran.

The learning program started at 9.30 am. Below is a brief summary of the objective of each activity along with a few photos and the observations from the program.

 

Activity: Human Bingo

Objective: Get to know team members and strengthen relationships with them

Result: There was active participation from everyone and true relationship bonds were seen during this time.

 

 

Activity: Tower Building

Objective: Importance of planning, team work, maximum use of available resources

Result: The teams that were formed truly exemplified the values that were the objective of the session.

Their findings as reported in the summary they presented:

·         Only teams that planned well were able to build the tower

·         Many were able to do well even without a perfect team

·         It's still possible to do more with less

·         A strong foundation was the key to a better result

 

 

Activity: 'SWOT' Analysis of Mangalore Police

Objective: Identifying strengths, weakness, opportunities and threats to Mangalore Police

Result: The teams brainstormed very effectively and had some detailed results from these discussions.

Their findings as reported in the summary they presented:

·         Strengths of Mangalore Police

o   High ranking officials commanding this commissionerate

o   Area of coverage makes most locations easily accessible

o   Possess the competency to face any type of threats

o   Good transport and patrolling facilities

o   Good contact with DG office, our government since it is a new commissionerate

o   Good improvements and achievements in traffic

o   Strong and sensible decision making at the higher level

o   Most citizens are educated, law-abiding and have basic legal knowledge

o   Staff are also well educated; some of them double graduates who have joined

o   Ability to respond quickly because of airport, port and rail

·         Improvement areas of Mangalore Police

o   Scientific surveillance on crime and criminals needs to be done

o   Traffic awareness and traffic management needs to be stepped up

o   Staff have to be made more people friendly

o   Bomb disposal squad needs to be available in Mangalore

o   Collection of intelligence, dissemination and execution to be improved

o   Criminal tracking system needs to be sophisticated

o   Lower salaries and personal facilities

o   Shirking away responsibility

·         Opportunities for Mangalore Police

o   Knowledge level of staff can be improved

o   Good educational and medical facilities in the city must be used by families

o   Direct International city links should be used to create an international identity

·         Threats to Mangalore Police

o   Underworld activities are increasingly becoming a threat

o   White collar criminals are a significant threat

o   Moral policing is a threat

o   Bossing over lower ranking officials is a threat to functioning

o   Communal sensitivity of the city is a threat

o   Hyper active media projecting police in the wrong light

o   Increase in crime through migrant population

o   Non-constitutional organizations that put pressure on the police

o   Political interference and transfers

o   False allegation made on police force

o   Manpower shortage and 24x7 work schedules

o   People's fear to come to the police station

On behalf of Round Table Mangalore, I would like to thank the Mangalore Police headed by Commissioner Mr. R Hitendra for giving Round Table this opportunity to serve the community through this activity.
